6 August 2020
Even though we are on our way out of lockdown I will not be running birthday parties until January 2021. I don’t think we are far enough into our recovery journey to feel confident to run a party even in an outdoor setting. I would also hate for someone to catch an infection at an event I had organised. I’m happy to pass on some party ideas if you would like to diy though!
Want to have a birthday party outside, finding out about nature, whilst running around having fun in the fresh air?
Mud Pies offers children aged between two and ten a great time outdoors, at any time of year, to celebrate their birthday with things to find, collect and make as well as great party food.
What happens at a party?
The Mud Pies’ leader meets your group in the wood’s car park and after a welcome we all make our way around the forest, splashing in puddles and looking for interesting things to collect.
Further into the wood we stop at “camp” (a bright blue tarpaulin decorated with party bunting – pictured above) where we look at our finds, make things and have party food. The remaining time is spent playing and exploring.
Children take part in one of the following activities:
– den building: learn how to make a great den for either a favourite teddy, action man or yourself
– swords and rods: with the help of a ball of string, turn some sticks into a sword, fishing rod or anything else your imagination likes
– stick man: choose a special stick and turn it into a friend to take home
– blobsters: collect some natural treasures from the wood and use them to create a work of art from a slice of clay
– toasted marshmallows: collect sticks in the wood and help prepare a fire on which to toast marshmallows. Mud Pies provides the marshmallows.
Saturday or Sundays – 10am to 12 noon or 2 to 4pm.
How many children can come?
A minimum of 15 and maximum of 40.
£11 per child if you provide the food – £165 base fee (equivalent to 15 children).
£17 per child if we organise the food on your behalf – £255 base fee (equivalent to 15 children).
Tea and coffee included as standard for all attending adults.
You can either provide all the food and drinks or we can organise it for you through The Bread Maker, Aberdeen’s artisan bakery and social enterprise. It consists of:
a slice of margherita pizza – sorry, this is cold: we haven’t figured out yet how to keep it warm in the woods!
a muffin – blueberry, choc chip, and/or cherry bakewell
a traybake – plain shortbread, millionaire’s shortbread, rocky road and/or flapjack
Drinks – water, apple juice, Ribena: hot chocolate in colder months. We also do tea and coffee for the adults (in picnic cups).
What does Mud Pies provide?
Mud Pies provides all materials for the activity as well as the tarpaulin, bunting, seating, first aid kit, bin bags, baby wipes, two folding camping tables (1.2m x 0.5m) with blue and white spotted pvc table covers and food and drinks if applicable.
What do we bring?
A birthday cake and any party bags you would like children to have. Mud Pies also recommends suitable clothing for children AND adults – wellies in particular and waterproofs when appropriate.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Woods are pretty sheltered places and Mud Pies is used to a bit of less-than-perfect weather so the party will go ahead unless the weather is deemed too miserable or dangerous. In this case the party will be either re-scheduled or refunded (minus the cost of any food provided by us). To date, this has never happened!
Can I leave my child in the care of Mud Pies at the party?
No. We need one adult for every five children. There will be one Mud Pies leader present who will organise the activities.
Are the activities completely safe?
Every reasonable care is taken to ensure that the venue and activity content are as safe as possible for those participating. Mud Pies encourages children if they feel suitably confident to explore so minor bumps and scrapes may occur occasionally. Parents/carers are responsible at all times for their child’s safety.
Can younger siblings stay?
Yes of course – woods are big places.
What about toilets?
A Potette travel potty is available for use, although we also follow the saying “Walk seven trees”!
How green are these parties?
As green as I can be. There is minimal packaging, crockery is reusable, local businesses are used as often as possible and we recycle all that we can.
How do I book?
Firstly, contact Mandy Tulloch on M: 07929 465680 or E: firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a date and discuss details.
